How to Compare Fire-Resistant Sheathing Manufacturers

Fire-resistant sheathing manufacturers should be compared by verifiable product and assembly evidence—not by an unsupported “best brand” ranking. Architects, fire-safety consultants, distributors, contractors and procurement teams need to know whether the proposed board matches the tested specimen, project wall build-up, manufacturing controls and delivery requirements.

A supplier can be well known and still lack the right evidence for a particular project. A less familiar manufacturer can be considered when its exact product, reports, quality system and application support withstand review. The goal is a defensible selection, not a universal winner.

First define “fire resistant” for the project

The specification may require one or more different forms of evidence:

  • Reaction-to-fire classification
  • Surface-burning characteristics such as ASTM E84 indices
  • Material noncombustibility under a named method
  • A complete wall or floor fire-resistance rating
  • Facade, exterior wall or other system-level performance

These are not equivalent. Tell manufacturers exactly which result, standard, edition and jurisdiction apply before requesting a comparison.

Compare exact products, not company reputations

A manufacturer may sell multiple sheathing families produced at different plants with different formulations, facings and approvals. Build the comparison at SKU level. Record thickness, dimensions, density, reinforcement, surface, edges, intended use, structural role and manufacturing location.

If the project permits alternatives, compare every proposed SKU against the basis-of-design requirement line by line. Shared thickness or material name is not evidence of equivalence.

Verify fire documents

Request the complete report or listing rather than a certificate image. Confirm laboratory identity and accreditation scope, report number, date, standard edition, client, sample-selection responsibility, specimen description, mounting or assembly construction, full result and limitations.

An ASTM E84 result does not create an hourly rating. A noncombustibility classification does not prove the complete wall. For more detail, use the MgO wall-board fire-report review guide and the fire-resistant wall-panel specifier guide.

Match the complete wall assembly

Where a fire-resistance rating is required, compare framing material and dimensions, stud spacing, wall height, load condition, board designation and thickness, layers, orientation, fasteners, joints, insulation, membranes, finishes and penetrations.

Ask which variations are explicitly permitted and who must approve a substitution. Do not accept a manufacturer’s general letter when the project requires a recognized listing, report, engineering assessment or authority approval.

Review structural and fastening information

Some fire-resistant sheathing products are nonstructural substrates; others may have documented structural roles. Confirm racking, wind, attachment or other load requirements separately. Request data in relevant directions and conditions, along with framing, support spacing, edge support and fastening instructions.

Fastener corrosion and compatibility can be critical for exterior, humid, treated-wood or magnesium-board applications. Require the specified fastener material/coating, length, head, diameter, spacing and embedment.

Evaluate moisture and durability boundaries

Fire performance does not establish exterior durability. Define storage, construction exposure, water management, dimensional movement, drying, freeze-thaw conditions, cladding and finish compatibility. Confirm whether the panel is interior lining, exterior substrate, tile backer, structural sheathing or another documented application.

Manufacturing quality and traceability

Ask how the supplier controls raw materials, formulation, reinforcement, thickness, density, curing, surfaces and dimensions. Review inspection frequency, acceptance limits, nonconformance handling, calibration, batch identification and change control.

The purchase order should connect the approved submittal to production and shipment. A test report for one plant or formulation should not silently follow a changed product.

Compare total procurement risk

Unit price should be normalized against usable area, thickness, breakage, weight, installation labor, fasteners, joint materials, required membranes, packaging, freight, customs, testing, lead time and replacement risk.

For international sourcing, request:

  • MOQ and production lead time
  • Package dimensions, pallet weight and container loading plan
  • Incoterm, port, shipping documents and delivery sequence
  • Sample and mock-up schedule
  • Inspection, damage and claims process
  • OEM/private-label scope and traceability implications

How Sulfycor should be evaluated

Sulfycor supplies magnesium-based boards for wall sheathing, lining, floors and modular applications. Buyers should evaluate the exact MgO sheathing product, not a general company claim.

The internal summary available during this content review lists several fire-related test entries but does not link them to full report numbers, laboratories, exact SKUs, thicknesses or assemblies. Those entries are not used here to rank Sulfycor above other manufacturers. A project comparison should use the underlying product-specific documents when available.

Manufacturer prequalification checklist

  1. Legal manufacturer, plant and export entity
  2. Exact product/SKU, formulation, thickness and intended application
  3. Required test reports, listings and current validity
  4. Assembly match and substitution approval route
  5. Structural, fastening, moisture, thermal and finish documentation
  6. Quality plan, tolerances, batch traceability and change control
  7. Samples, mock-up, technical-response responsibility and revision control
  8. Capacity, MOQ, lead time, packaging, freight and claims handling

Frequently asked questions

Which fire-resistant sheathing brand is best?

No manufacturer is universally best. Select the exact product and supplier whose evidence, assembly match, quality controls and delivery plan meet the project.

Can brands be compared by fire rating alone?

No. Confirm whether each claim is a material, surface-burning or complete assembly result, then compare structural, moisture, fastening, quality and commercial requirements.

Is a certificate logo sufficient?

No. Verify the issuer, report/listing, scope, plant, product, standard, result and validity.

Should the lowest-price board be selected?

Compare complete installed and procurement risk, including labor, accessories, freight, breakage, documentation and replacement exposure.
