Fire Performance

Mineral-based MgO boards can provide useful reaction-to-fire performance. Sulfycor holds EN 13501-1 Class A1 and ASTM E84 FSI 0 / SDI 0 results for corresponding samples. A board classification is not a fire-resistance duration for a complete wall, floor, SIP or duct assembly.

Moisture Resistance

Appropriately selected MgO boards can tolerate moisture better than paper-faced interior boards in many applications. They are not automatically waterproof or suitable for permanent weather exposure; membranes, drainage, coatings and joint details remain part of the design.

MgO Board Is a Category—Formulation Matters

MgO boards can use different magnesium-salt binder systems. Sulfycor manufactures magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) boards formed from reactive magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate and water.

This distinction identifies the binder system, but formulation alone is not proof of installed performance. Product data, test scope, quality control and the complete assembly still need to be reviewed.

Limitations

Advantages Only Matter in the Right Assembly

A balanced benefits page should also explain what MgO board does not guarantee. This helps buyers avoid choosing a board from a headline alone.

  • Not all MgO boards use the same formulation or provide the same performance.
  • Moisture resistance does not mean permanent weather exposure or a complete waterproofing system.
  • A1 or ASTM E84 results do not equal a two-hour wall, floor or duct rating.

What are the main benefits of magnesium oxide board?

Common reasons for specifying an appropriate MgO board include reaction-to-fire performance, moisture tolerance, dimensional stability, physical durability and a choice of surfaces. Each benefit must be checked against the product and assembly.

Is MgO board fireproof?

“Fireproof” is too broad. A board may have a reaction-to-fire or surface-burning result, while the fire-resistance duration of a wall, floor or duct depends on the tested complete construction.

Is magnesium oxide board waterproof?

No board should be treated as a complete waterproofing system. MgO board can provide useful moisture resistance, but exposure, membranes, coatings, drainage, joints and edge details still need to be designed.

Do all MgO boards have the same properties?

No. Binder formulation, raw materials, reinforcement, curing, density, thickness and surface treatment can all change performance. Evaluate the proposed product rather than the category name alone.

Does MgO board resist mold and termites?

The mineral board itself does not provide the same paper-faced or wood-based food source as some alternatives. That does not replace moisture management, pest control or complete-building detailing.
