“MgO board vs fiberboard” is not a valid one-line comparison until the fiberboard type and panel duty are defined. Fiberboard can mean low-density wood-fiber sheathing, MDF, HDF, wood-fiber insulation board or a cement-bonded fiber product. These panels have different structures, exposure limits and code paths. MgO boards also vary by binder chemistry, reinforcement, density and manufacturer.

Define the required panel duty
Record whether the panel will act as interior lining, exterior sheathing, continuous insulation, structural bracing, subfloor, finish substrate, acoustic layer or fire-protection component. Add the building type, jurisdiction, framing, support spacing, loads, impact level, exposure, finish and design life.
A product that works as interior MDF cabinetry is not a substitute for wood-fiber exterior insulation. Likewise, an MgO lining board should not be assumed to provide structural sheathing capacity. Compare products only after their proposed duties match.

Compare fire claims correctly
Separate reaction to fire from fire resistance. A panel classification describes how a specimen reacts under a stated method; an hourly wall, floor or ceiling rating belongs to a complete assembly. The assembly can depend on board thickness and layers, framing, insulation, fasteners, joints, penetrations and orientation.
For either option, request the test standard, laboratory, report or listing number, date, specimen description, result and application limits. Do not infer the rating of a proposed wall from a generic “fireproof” claim.
Evaluate moisture as an assembly condition
Neither panel name makes a wall waterproof. Exterior and wet-area performance depends on drainage, water-resistive barriers, flashings, membranes, joints, penetrations, coatings, drying and workmanship.
For MgO board, verify formulation chemistry, chloride content, dimensional movement, fastener compatibility and permitted exposure. Obtain bending strength and stiffness in both directions, fastener pull-through or withdrawal, impact data and racking or diaphragm values when the panel contributes to lateral resistance. Confirm thickness, support spacing, edge blocking, orientation and allowable design route.
Fastener type and coating should be compatible with the panel, framing and exposure. Check head style, length, spacing, edge distance, overdriving limits and treatment of cut edges. Substitution is unsafe when the replacement’s fastener behavior has not been documented.
Account for heat, sound and vapor strategy
Low-density wood-fiber insulation can provide thermal resistance that a denser mineral sheet may not. MgO board may contribute mass and surface durability, but it should not be credited with insulation performance without declared data.
Acoustic results belong to assemblies, not isolated panels. Compare tested wall or floor configurations with the same framing, cavities, insulation, joints and penetrations. Also coordinate vapor control and drying potential for the climate and enclosure design; avoid trapping moisture between low-permeance layers without project-specific analysis.
Installation and logistics comparison
- Cutting: define score-and-snap or saw methods, blade type, dust extraction and PPE.
- Handling: compare sheet weight, fragility, edge damage, storage, acclimation and unloading.
- Jointing: specify gaps, tape, compound, sealant, movement joints and weather protection.
- Finishing: verify primers, coatings, renders, membranes, mortars and adhesives.
- Supply: confirm dimensions, thicknesses, edges, batch traceability, packaging, minimum order and lead time.
Environmental claims need comparable boundaries
“Natural,” “mineral,” “wood-based” or “recyclable” does not prove lower impact. Request product-specific environmental declarations where available and compare the same functional unit, service life, geography and life-cycle stages. Include binder and resin chemistry, energy, transport, durability, replacement, packaging and end-of-life assumptions.
For indoor projects, also review current emissions documentation and safety data for the exact product, adhesives, coatings and joint compounds. Cutting controls remain necessary even when a panel is marketed as low-emitting.
When an MgO board may be the better candidate
An exact MgO or magnesium sulfate board may be a candidate where the project needs a documented mineral panel for lining, sheathing, floor or modular construction and the supplier can provide traceable fire, structural, moisture and installation evidence. Suitability depends on the product and assembly, not the MgO label alone.
When a fiberboard product may be the better candidate
A specified wood-fiber insulation or sheathing product may be preferable when thermal performance, vapor-open enclosure design or acoustic absorption is central. MDF or HDF may be appropriate for controlled interior manufactured products and finishes. A cement-bonded fiber panel may serve other specialized duties. Name the family and grade in every comparison.
