20 abr Placa de MgO frente a placa de silicato de calcio: Guía de especificaciones
MgO board and calcium silicate board are mineral panels, but they are not interchangeable “drywall” products. Their formulations, density, reinforcement, edge profiles, test evidence and approved uses vary by manufacturer. A project team should compare exact products and assemblies—not generic material names—before writing a specification.
This guide frames the choice for architects, contractors, modular builders, distributors and procurement teams. It does not replace the manufacturer’s current technical data, tested assembly listing or project engineering.

First define the panel duty
Start with the function the panel must perform. “Wall board” can mean an interior lining, exterior sheathing, tile substrate, fire-protection board, shaft or service enclosure, ceiling panel, structural skin or factory-finished surface. Those duties require different evidence.
Record the building type, jurisdiction, interior or exterior exposure, framing, support spacing, loads, impact level, finish, acoustic target, fire requirement and design life. Do not select a board based only on a marketing comparison of fire, water and strength.
Compare fire performance by tested assembly
A panel’s reaction-to-fire classification is different from the fire-resistance rating of a wall, floor or ceiling assembly. A rated assembly can depend on board thickness and layers, stud type and spacing, fasteners, joints, insulation, penetrations and orientation.
For either material, request the full report or recognized listing that matches the proposed construction. Confirm the test standard, laboratory, report number, date, specimen description, result and field-of-application limits. A result from one thickness or assembly should not be transferred to another product family without documented support.
Evaluate moisture without using the word waterproof
Neither material name proves that a completed wall is waterproof. Liquid-water control depends on membranes, flashings, drainage, joints, penetrations, coatings, transitions and workmanship. Panel tests may describe absorption, thickness change, strength retention or cyclic exposure, but each result has a defined specimen and method.
For MgO board, formulation chemistry and chloride content can be relevant to moisture movement and fastener compatibility. Sulfycor positions magnesium sulfate board as chloride-free, but a project submittal should still identify the exact product, formulation, permitted exposure and compatible fasteners. For calcium silicate board, verify whether the selected grade is intended for humid interiors, direct-wet substrates, exterior exposure or high-temperature service; these uses should not be assumed from the generic name.
Check structure, impact and dimensional movement
Obtain bending strength, stiffness, fastener pull-through or withdrawal data, impact classification and dimensional movement where relevant. Confirm test direction because reinforced sheets can behave differently along and across the panel.
Also compare panel weight, thickness tolerance, edge condition, supported and unsupported joints, perimeter gaps and movement joints. If the board contributes to racking resistance, diaphragm action or another structural duty, require engineering values and a recognized design route for the exact product.
Coordinate finishes and interfaces
Confirm compatibility with primers, paints, renders, tile membranes, mortars, adhesives, sealants and proprietary joint systems. Mockups are useful when the finish is appearance-critical or when products from different manufacturers meet.
Detail interfaces at concrete, steel, timber, windows, doors, service penetrations and dissimilar panels. Many field problems originate at joints and transitions rather than in the center of a sheet.
Compare fabrication, installation and logistics
| Elemento de trabajo | Questions for both panel types | Impacto de las adquisiciones |
|---|---|---|
| Corte | Score-and-snap or saw? What blade, extraction and PPE are required? | Tooling, dust controls, speed and edge quality |
| Fijación | Which fastener, coating, length, spacing and edge distance? | Corrosion risk, labor and inspection |
| Unirse | Which tape, compound, sealant, gap and movement detail? | Trade coordination and finish quality |
| Manejar | What are sheet weight, breakage risk, storage and acclimation rules? | Packaging, unloading, waste and crew size |
| Suministro | Are thickness, dimensions, edges and documentation consistently available? | Lead time, minimum order, substitutions and batch control |
Cost should mean installed and compliant cost
Do not compare panel price per sheet alone. Include freight, packaging, breakage, unloading, cutting, dust extraction, fasteners, joint materials, coatings, labor, waste, inspection and the cost of obtaining an accepted submittal. A lower unit price can become a higher installed cost if the board is difficult to source, document or finish.
When MgO board may fit
An exact MgO or magnesium sulfate board may fit projects seeking a mineral panel for documented wall, sheathing, floor or modular applications. The choice is strongest when the supplier can match the requested thickness and duty with traceable test reports, installation instructions, compatible fasteners and quality-control information.
When calcium silicate board may fit
An exact calcium silicate product may fit interior lining, partition, ceiling, fire-protection or specialized industrial duties when its grade and evidence match the exposure and assembly. Calcium silicate is a broad product family, so confirm density, reinforcement, surface, curing, mechanical properties and permitted use rather than relying on the category name.

Preguntas frecuentes
Is MgO board the same as calcium silicate board?
No. They use different binder systems and can have different reinforcement, manufacturing processes and performance. Compare exact products.
Which board has better fire resistance?
The generic material name cannot answer that. Compare the required reaction-to-fire classification and the fire-resistance rating of the exact proposed assembly.
Which board is better in wet areas?
Use the product whose documented exposure limits, dimensional behavior, fasteners, joints, membrane and finish system match the wet-area design. Neither name makes an assembly waterproof.
Can either board replace gypsum drywall?
Sometimes a mineral panel can serve as an alternative lining, but thickness, weight, joints, finish, acoustics, fire assembly and code acceptance must be redesigned for the exact product.
